Why is it in this infinite sea of potential, that exists around us,
How come we keep creating the same reality?
Why do we keep having the same relationships?
Why do we keep getting the same things happen to us over and over again?
Are we I addicted to our limititations and negative emotions?
Is it possible then, that we are so conditioned to our daily lives…
So conditioned to the way we create our lives,
That we buy the idea that we have no control at all?
Isn’t it amazing then,
That we have options and potential that exist and we are unaware of them?
If I was describing hypnosis to another person, say a potential new client, I may introduce hypnosis in the following way:
Hypnosis is a fascinating area of human experience, innate in all human beings. Hypnosis has been successfully applied to bring healing and resolve pain and suffering since the dawn of man and the emergence of ancient civilisations.
So, I like to describe hypnosis to mean several things. First and foremost I believe hypnosis is a natural innate ecological mechanism present in all humanity. I see it as ‘the way of suggestion.’ It is as much an art as a science. Hypnosis can be utilised highly effectively to influence and persuade others through elegant communication. And to bring resolutions to our limitations that cause pain and suffering (physical and emotional).
I believe, rather than a way of intellectual reasoning, it is biased more towards suggestions that help individuals to explore and make adjustments to their own internal subjective experience and to utilise their own inner resources. Hypnosis provides the mechanism to create more resourceful and improved maps of individual’s own experiences and reality[i], and how they uniquely interpret meaning from the world around them. And through various techniques, it facilitates people to make ecological changes easily and rapidly for themselves. So, one could say, “there is no such thing as hypnosis, only suggestion[ii]”.
Unfortunately many people today mistrust hypnosis. Many believe hypnosis to be a dark art. Others think it a hoax or mumbo-jumbo. There are those that fear it as a tool for controlling minds, even abusing people, or as a way of making fools of others. People with religious backgrounds have been, and still sometimes remain suspicious of it, possibly mistrusting it as a demonic. We are also suspicious and sensitive to the hypnotic power of mass hysteria, propaganda, and its modern day equivalent of advertising and marketing.
All these maybe true, however I believe that the main objection to being open to hypnosis is our own education and conditioning (paradoxically in itself hypnotically installed in each of us by our teaching system). In a nutshell we have been conditioned to believe mainly in the external world of objectivity, reasoning, logic and scientifically proven reality – whatever that is. Whilst the ‘modern age of reason’ has brought us many advances, I believe it has unfortunately lead to a dismissal of the awesome natural power of the human mind. If the human mind is compared to an iceberg, then the conditioned (conscious) mind represents the visible tip – mere 10% of our capability as humans, and the larger (90%), invisible part representing the unconscious mind[iii]. Human beings, and our brains, are phenomenal creations. The subjective nature of our internal experience remains vastly unknown and untapped that each of us, every man, woman and child on the planet has access to. Many scientist of today, are now saying that this inner world is the new frontier of exploration and indeed popularity is emerging around self development, improvement and betterment in many areas.
So simply put, I believe hypnosis is nothing more than an amplifier of internal experience. Whilst changes can be made in a waking state, Hypnosis tends to slow things down sufficiently to simply allow ecological changes to be made easily. By facilitating an individual that is seeking help to shift their attention internally, away from attending to the ‘here and now’ and their own intellect (ego) and to search[iv] for meaning and resources from their own past experience and memories that will benefit them in some way. This produces an altered state of mind[v] that we all do naturally every day: when we plan, when we think about something, when we pray or day-dream, or remember an experience etc. So, I believe hypnosis is merely a vehicle that empowers an individual to select, control and shift their own attention inwards and guide themselves to attend to new awareness’s of their own experiences and utilise these together with that person’s own inner resources to produce their own solution unique to their own experiences and ways of looking at the world.
In effect hypnosis is a vehicle that helps people improve their maps of their internal world of experience and how they relate reality (The territory).
